Quake Survivor Breastfeeds Nine Babies
This is a stunning story of love and generosity, as well as a testimony to the potential of human breasts to give seemingly limitless amounts of milk on demand. In earthquake ravaged Jiangyou, China, a 29 year old new mother nurses not only her own newborn, but also eight other babies. Three of them are children of traumatized quake victims who are unable to nurse, and five others are orphans who are unable to use formula because the orphanage does not have powdered milk.
It is important for mothers to remember that the smaller the capacity of your breasts to hold milk, the more frequently you must nurse, and the greater the demand, the more frequently you must also nurse. In addition, the early postpartum period is a time when the breasts are more able to quickly grow and adjust to an increased demand.
